In the same week that Detroit’s automakers are making their case in Washington for billions in loans from the government, one of the organizations that count the car companies among their members, the National Association of Manufacturers, is ordering budget cuts and layoffs to achieve savings. The organization eliminated 17 fulltime positions Dec. 2, sparing its top senior policy staff, said a NAM spokesperson. The group also froze 2009 salaries and slashed operating expenses, particularly in the travel and entertainment department.
