The AHA board has opened a search for their next leader and hopes to make a selection by October After 11 years at the helm of the American Heart Association, M. Cass Wheeler has announced he will retire at the end of the year. A spokesperson for AHA said the group has hired an outside consultant to help with an internal selection process. Wheeler, 68, spent most of his career with the nonprofit, starting in a small affiliate office in Austin. In 1982 he joined the Dallas headquarters as chief operating officer, a position he held for 17 years before succeeding Dudley Hafner as CEO in 1997.
