Head of professional teaching standards board dies

Ronald Thorpe, CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, died from lung cancer at his home in Norwalk, Conn., July 1. He was 63.

Thorpe led the Arlington, Va.-based NBPTS since 2011. The organization’s executive committee credited him with reinvigorating the group by pushing to make NBPTS certification the norm for every teacher.

When Carolyn April made the transition from journalist to industry analyst at CompTIA five years ago, the move was like slipping into a new but well-fitting pair of shoes.

Just six months after starting a new job, Walter Marlowe is also shouldering another leadership role. The new executive director of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists is the incoming chair of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives. He grabs the baton during CESSE’s annual conference July 14-16 in Norfolk, Va.

In some ways, CESSE and AAPS are going through similar experiences as they seek to stay relevant in a rapidly changing space, Marlowe said. CESSE—once an informal network of CEOs—is welcoming other C-suite executives, and hired its first executive director in 2013. The group has about 220 member organizations and 1,000 individual members.

Richard Green has joined Vetted Solutions as part of the executive recruitment firm’s recent outreach to the hospitality and destination marketing industry.

Green most recently was principal of RBG Group, a consulting firm.
