Why this association CEO doesn't want an employment contract

July 11, 2014

Dean Garfield says there was some serendipity involved when he landed the CEO role at Information Technology Industry Council in 2008. A litigator by training, Garfield, 45, had worked for the Recording Industry Association of America and the Motion Picture Association of America as both industries grappled with piracy and illegal content trading. Eight months into the ITI search, a friend who was interviewing for the position recommended him to the recruiter. His legal and association background intrigued the search committee and, after a rigorous application process that included writing a strategic plan, he got the job.
