Managing partner of Sterling Martin Associates, veteran of 25 years in search; tries to join big-firm experience with smaller-firm service

David Martin says he didn’t “declare his major” until he got to the “big leagues.”

The managing partner of Washington, D.C.-based executive search firm Sterling Martin Associates started his recruiting career in Atlanta in 1989, working for the Lucas Group and Boyden International before being called up to the majors with Korn Ferry in 1996.

That was where he found his specialization in the nonprofit sector, Martin told CEO Update in an interview in his office near Connecticut Avenue and K Street.

“Prior to that, I had been a generalist, and when I started at Korn Ferry I did everything from consumer goods to financial services to technology. I worked with every partner in the Atlanta office on a broad range of industries.
