Korsmo boosts membership with advocacy, new products

First-time CEO leads team at American Land Title Association with clear direction, focus on constant improvement—and a cowbell

When the board of governors of the American Land Title Association needed a new CEO in 2011, they didn’t bother with an executive search.  Instead, the board immediately tapped COO Michelle Korsmo, citing her role in achieving record membership levels, higher revenue and increased contributions to the group’s political action committee. 

Since Korsmo, 41, joined the group in 2008, the number of members has grown about 25 percent to 4,200 companies. Revenue, which had fallen to $3.8 million in 2009 during the housing market collapse, rose to $6.4 million in 2011.  

The association emphasizes its value as an advocate for the land title insurance industry. In recent months, it has rolled out new tools that members can use in their marketing, including the National Title Professional designation and the voluntary Title Insurance and Settlement Company Best Practices.
