‘I don’t believe a candidate who comes in and says everything was great’; veteran also expects hiring organizations to be forthright

Executive recruiter Pat Friel wants job candidates to “let their guard down.”

The Washington, D.C., managing partner of Heidrick & Struggles expects to hear the whole career story—the ups and the downs—from executives seeking high-level jobs at the trade associations and other organizations that are his clients.

“We get pretty deep,” Friel told CEO Update in an interview from his offices at 20th and Eye Streets Northwest, just off Pennsylvania Avenue. “We want to know about the success but we want to know about the things that weren’t successes, the failures. We want to know how the candidate was involved.
