Turnaround expert Doug Culkin discusses running National Apartment Association as a business, shares his contract experience

Association management veteran Doug Culkin relishes most challenges. After all, he’s taken on leadership of three groups in crisis mode, all in what he called “financial dire straits,” and in three different industry sectors. He’s become somewhat of a turnaround specialist, engaged in making troubled groups profitable.
But getting into associations at all was somewhat accidental. After college, he worked for a bank that is now part of Wells Fargo, doing corporate business development. “One of the groups I was charged with developing was associations.” Having the business background, he says, has been a help meeting those challenges. But he’s clear there is always another to be met.
