Speech-language-hearing group taps DEI expert as CEO

Longtime ASHA veteran Vicki Deal-Williams to become top exec following retirement of Arlene Pietranton at the end of the year

Many associations have made new hires in recent years to oversee diversity efforts. But when Vicki Deal-Williams first stepped into the role of chief staff officer for multicultural affairs at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 1997, there were few association positions like hers.

“‘Language’ is our middle name,” said Deal-Williams, who will become ASHA’s next CEO on Jan. 1. “When language is your middle name, you have to focus on culture and do it well.”
