Small-staff AAOE keeps open mind in position descriptions

Indianapolis-based group had needs in education, membership; ‘tell us in your cover letter what you could, would and should do’

“Tell us what you can do.”

If that sounds a little open-ended for a job description, that’s because Addy Kujawa, CEO of the $2 million-revenue Indianapolis-based American Alliance of Orthopaedic Executives, intended it that way.

The eight-staff group has experienced strong recent growth, and was looking last fall for manager and director-level employees in the areas of education and membership, Kujawa told CEO Update.

“We were trying to figure out if we needed a membership person, an education person, or one person to oversee both,” she said.

“We didn’t want to pin it down, so we put out a post that said, ‘Respond to what you would want to do out of the below. Here are some education thoughts, here are some membership thoughts, tell us the story of your experience and how you would fit not just into these roles but also our culture.’”
