For Nicole Testa Boston, CEO of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, association leadership comes down to connecting with people. It’s a skill she learned while helping in her family’s restaurant business, House of Pizza, in St. Cloud, Minn.

“My dad would walk around the restaurant and … check in on every table and see if everything is all right,” Boston said. “It’s the thing you do at a conference or at a meeting. It’s really just checking in and making sure you understand what the needs are.”

Understanding what association colleagues need is also part of Boston’s new role as chair of the Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives. Currently vice chair, she steps up to the top slot at the group’s annual meeting, which will happen virtually July 22-23 rather than in-person in Detroit. The conference will include three sessions related to the pandemic.
