CEO Update: How has ABA changed under your leadership? Revenue and advocacy spending have increased exponentially—how did you achieve that, and why was it necessary?
Susan Neely: One, there was a need for greater, more sophisticated advocacy, and two, we got results. There’s confidence in us—you don’t give money to an organization you don’t have confidence in. There was a need and we demonstrated that we had a strategy and the ability to deliver on the strategy. The whole world of advocacy has been transformed. As we saw in the last presidential election, you engage in conversations with America and voters, and that’s where the influence comes on different elected bodies, and that’s one massive change.
