Motion Picture Association of America may become latest trade group to adapt structure to changing industry environment

The hacking scandal that hit Sony Pictures late last year had at least one unintentional victim: the Motion Picture Association of America. And how the group responds could expose the structural vulnerabilities in associations with only a few members.
Several news outlets reported in early February that Sony nearly pulled out of MPAA because of frustration for what the studio viewed as the association’s slow response in condemning the hack. Sony is one of only six MPAA members, so its departure would have been devastating for the group.
