Keeping student members once they’re no longer students

Associations have adopted different strategies for convincing students about the value of membership once they begin their careers

Many students once joined AIHA simply to get a discount on the “White Book,” a key reference source for people in the environmental health and safety field. Then these students would drop out of the association.

But AIHA, formerly known as the American Industrial Hygiene Association, has been putting more resources into membership retention in recent years, including converting students into long-term members. The “aha!” moment: a recent survey that found the career development opportunities offered by AIHA were not necessarily the ones students were looking for.
