Intelligent Transportation Society chooses staunch advocate for new technology

Executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation to lead $6M-revenue group

Nov. 3, 2017

The Intelligent Transportation Society of America has tapped the executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation as its next president and CEO.

Shailen Bhatt joins the $6 million-revenue ITS America after the departure of former CEO Regina Hopper, who resigned in July. Bhatt will head a group that has seen a significant leadership shakeup in recent months. In addition to Hopper’s departure, ITS America announced six new senior leadership staff in April.

Bhatt is an advocate for embracing new technologies in his role as head of Colorado’s transportation system, according to a Denver Post article about his departure. He launched an effort to bring Elon Musk’s proposal for the high-speed train service, Hyperloop, to the state; partnered with an Uber-owned company to demonstrate the feasibility of self-driving commercial trucks; and worked to prepare part of Interstate 70 for driverless vehicles.
