Al Gaspar, CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (now the Auto Care Association) from 2000-04, died Nov. 25 at his home in Cave Creek, Ariz., according to a statement from the group. He was 79.

“Al was one of the most respected and revered individuals in the business,” Bill Hanvey, current CEO of the group, said in the statement. “When Al walked into a meeting room you knew it—he had a presence that commanded attention.”

Prior to becoming president and CEO of AAIA in 2000, Gaspar was president of the Automotive Parts and Accessories Association for five years following three terms as chairman of the association.

As AIAA CEO, Gaspar led a fundraising campaign to build a $5 million Aftermarket Education Center building at Northwood University in Midland, Mich.
