Marty Durbin, departing executive vice president and chief strategy officer of the American Petroleum Institute, told CEO Update the time is right for a change following the arrival of new CEO Mike Sommers.

“I love the area of energy, the politics and policy, and I want to continue to focus on those areas,” Durbin said. “But I also feel like I’ve got an opportunity to step back and see what options are out there. It may be another trade association but it could be anything else as well.”

The $207 million-revenue API announced Durbin’s departure last month, effective Jan. 31. Sommers joined last summer.

“I’m just as excited to watch Mike Sommers come in here and say, ‘What does API need to be to get us through the next 10 years?’ and to be able to help with that transition.
