Boosting board engagement in virtual world takes planning

CEOs advise making reading materials concise, assigning roles to increase interaction and building in opportunities for side conversations

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, relationship building happened naturally at in-person board meetings. Board members got to know one another while chatting over coffee and dinners. But after a year of being remote, Zoom fatigue has become so pervasive it’s practically cliché.

“I think that engagement is so hard right now. People have so many demands on their time and energy that if it’s not meaningful, but also enjoyable, then board members have too many completely valid reasons for not directing their attention to where we need it directed within the association,” AABB CEO Debra BenAvram said. Members of AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks) are individuals and institutions in the fields of transfusion medicine and biotherapies.
