The nation’s two largest automobile trade groups have combined into a single association that wants people to think about cars as tomorrow’s hottest technology trend.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation has been formed from the merger of the $11 million-revenue Association of Global Automakers and $33 million-revenue Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. In an unusual move, the merger was officially announced Jan. 8 during an event run by a separate association: the Consumer Technology Association’s CES trade show in Las Vegas, where many new technology products make their public debut.
