When Cathy Gates joined the American College of Cardiology’s finance department nearly three decades ago, she found the “sense of purpose” she had been looking for. But as she advanced through the organization, Gates didn't have her eye on the CEO role.
“I’ve always had this desire to grow and learn and do more. And so it just seemed like a natural progression,” she said.
Now, after two separate stints as the ACC’s interim leader, she has been tapped to officially take on the role for the longer term. She was named CEO of the $142M-revenue organization Dec. 2. ACC has more than 54,000 members, including physicians and other cardiovascular care professionals, and 500 staff.
