While negotiating a contract is a lonely pursuit, there are resources available—starting with your peer network, but also including websites, executive recruiters and attorneys who specialize in association employment law.

“This is where your network is really helpful,” said one CEO who spoke to CEO Update anonymously in order to describe an unfavorable turn in contract negotiations.

This CEO consulted peers, association general counsels and employment lawyers after the board offered a poor contract. All provided free advice.

“I was really so grateful and kind of amazed that all these people will help me in a situation like this just because it’s a nice thing to do,” the CEO said.
