What’s in a job title?

Labels can be rewarding, but won’t transcend work accomplishments. Some titles don't translate well outside an organization. Others are just confusing. Should job seekers get tripped up when a new position has a lesser-sounding title, even if it offers more money and responsibilities? "You have to fit your job title in with the culture of the people who are your members," said Donna French Dunn, CEO of the Association of YMCA Professionals.

With many ways to write contracts, have yours tailored to specific needs

Experts say top executives should insist on contracts with severance clauses, while options for individual perks are myriad. “For some, maximized current salary is most important, for others it’s retirement and deferring taxes,” attorney Jeff Tenenbaum said. “For some, fringe benefits that are not taxable are important—first-class travel, country clubs, downtown social clubs. These things all have price tags."
